Stella

Their journey

• Stella, then called Gamma, was surrendered by her owners in December 2025. A 2.5-year-old heeler who had lived with a family her whole life, she arrived shy, frightened, and overwhelmed by shelter life. Volunteers walked with her and offered hugs, but she still shied away from people who hoped to adopt her. One volunteer took her out for a day and had to bring her back quickly: Stella shook the entire time and vomited in the car. At adoption events she cowered under tables and chairs, and no one showed interest.
• In July, a volunteer who had success bringing dogs into his home took Stella for an extended stay. She got along with the family dog, formed a special bond with the family cat, was immediately house-trained, and showed no mealtime aggression with the other animals. She had to be lifted into the car at first, then grew comfortable loading up after pup cups, trips to the family farm, visits to local businesses, and even a few meetings with her foster dad. Stella was so unused to being treated with care that she didn't know how to eat her first pup cup. She learned quickly by watching her foster dog pal, Gil.
• During foster care, Stella went on a foster-to-adopt with a couple, but she escaped their fence four times and came back to her original foster home. After two and a half weeks, her foster parent had to return her to the shelter for the weekend, which turned out to be a blessing.
• She went back on a Friday. The next day, a wonderful family with three children came in and fell in love with Stella. Two weeks in a foster home had changed her from a timid, shy dog into a happy, tail-wagging companion. The family adopted her, giving Stella the forever home she had always wanted, with plenty of playtime with her new kids.
